The light bulb, cell phone, motion pictures and even peanut butter are just a few American inventions that have helped make our country great. Whether you have children or not, this affects us all. Innovations like these produce major revenue streams into the U.S. and fund our lifestyle. If we, as a country, do not stay competitive and a leader in innovation a major decline in our standard of living will most definitely occur, not to mention the diseases that will go uncured or the inventions that will not be created.
There is growing concern that the United States is not preparing a sufficient number of students, teachers, and practitioners in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics known as STEM fields. Once a leading nation in STEM education, the U.S. is now far behind.
According to the Department of Education only 16 percent of American high school seniors are proficient in mathematics and interested in a STEM career. Even among those who do go on to pursue a college major in the STEM fields, only about half choose to work in a related career. The United States is falling behind, ranking 28th in mathematics and 24th in science among 40 industrialized nations. Once a leader in STEM education, the U.S. is now far behind many countries on several measures. In our competitive global economy, this situation is unacceptable and is the reason Renewable Futures was created. Please support us in our efforts to reverse this damaging trend.
